Rather than remain upset and pray for Donald Trump’s failure, posting anti-Trump messages on Facebook every day for the next four years, I’ve decided to be calm. We have no choice now but to give Trump a chance and hope for the best.
Maybe, just maybe, if the surprisingly conciliatory tone in his acceptance speech is any reason to have hope, Trump will realize the weight and responsibility of what he’s about to assume and put on his big boy pants. Granted, a Republican Congress most likely will run amok and assault the things we’ve become used to in our daily democratic lives. Get used to that. But maybe, maaaaybe, our new president, understanding his now-awesome and overwhelming power, will show some restraint. Maybe he will give us single-payer health care, keep us commitments to climate change agreements; not get us into a nuclear war because someone in China posted an unflattering comment about one of his casinos on Twitter, reconcile himself to the fact that a rising tide lifts all boats and abandon trickle down economics, etc.
I’ll pause here until you stop laughing. But I mean, hey, it’s not like he’s incapable of surprises — as we all know too well. I suggest adopting a cautious wait-and-see attitude.
As far as trying to explain this to your kids, I would say teach them the “v” word: Vote!!! Mid-term elections are but two years away.
This is still the greatest country on earth. Though, I admit, the fact that we took a pass on arguably the most qualified person ever to seek the office and gave it to the most unfit buffoon out there seems a strange way to prove it.

We have experienced an emotional roller coaster in the last week or so. First there was the joy of the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series. Then there was the sorrow of Donald Trump winning the presidency. This has led me to compose the following ditty:-
Go, Trump, go
Go, Trump, go
Hey, America, what do you say
We gotta get rid of Trump today.
