A 64-year-old man was shot to death in his home early Sunday in west suburban Aurora.

Samuel Smith Jr. was found with a single gunshot wound in his home in the 800 block of Iowa Avenue at 12:35 a.m., according to Aurora police.

He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead at 1:22 a.m., police said.

Smith’s live-in girlfriend was the only other person home at the time and was asleep on the second floor, police said. Both she and another person reported hearing more than one shot.

“Detectives have several working theories but no firm motives as of yet,” police said. “It is also not known if Smith was targeted.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Aurora police at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to crime stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
