34-year-old man fatally hit by car near Valparaiso

A 34-year-old northwest Indiana man was killed Saturday night after he was hit by a vehicle south of Valparaiso.

At 8 p.m., officers responded to a call of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle outside The Designers Club, 2351 Indiana 2, according to a statement from the Porter County Sheriff’s office.

A 31-year-old woman from Valparaiso, Ind. was driving a red 2001 GMC Jimmy eastbound in the area when she saw a person standing in the roadway, according to the statement.

The woman tried to swerve away, but hit 34-year-old Christopher Niloff, of Portage, Ind., with the passenger side of her vehicle. Niloff was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor for the driver, and Niloff’s toxicology results are pending, police said.

The roadway was closed as authorities investigated the crash, but was reopened at 10:30 p.m.
