Illinois football honors deceased student after car crash

Gameday Saturday’s are supposed to be a time of excitement for college football fans. Saturday in Champaign, however, Illini fans watched with heavy hearts.

Brett Lerner, a journalism student at Illinois and member of the Illini media, died Friday night in a car crash. Before their game against Wisconsin Saturday afternoon, the Illinois football team took a moment to remember Lerner.

The 21-year-old worked for the Daily Illini in their sports department. He was also worked with the Big Ten Network as a play-by-play broadcaster.

Illinois held a moment of silence in addition to honoring Lerner on their video board before the start of the game.

The Daily Illini said they plan on honoring the Buffalo Grove native this week.
