An 89-year-old man was run over by his own car Thursday evening near his home in northwest Indiana.

A witness told investigators he heard screeching tires and saw Marion E. Beladela’s 1997 Chevrolet Lumina rolling in reverse. The driver’s side tire rolled over his chest in the 4500 block of 16th Street in Hobart at 5:38 p.m., according to a statement from Hobart police. The car then continued rolling backward into the street.

It wasn’t immediately known how Beladela ended up on the ground underneath the car, police said.

He suffered extensive injuries to his chest and was airlifted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 2:41 a.m. Friday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

His death was ruled an accident.
