Police: 4 dead, 12 wounded in Wednesday shootings

Four people were killed and 12 others wounded in Wednesday shootings in Chicago.

Two men, ages 23 and 24, were in a car heading south from 65th and Karlov in the West Lawn neighborhood at 9:55 p.m. when someone in a black SUV fired multiple shots at them, according to Chicago Police. The victims’ car then crashed in the 4100 block of West Marquette. The car could be seen in the front lawn of a house on that block with its damaged front end on the home’s front steps.

The 24-year-old, identified as Hani Yousef, was shot in the chest and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:19 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Yousef lived in the 8200 block of South Luna in Burbank. The other man suffered a graze wound to the neck and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition. Police said both victims have gang affiliations.

About 40 minutes earlier, a man was shot to death in the Oakland neighborhood on the South Side.

DeLon Sims, 23, was sitting in a vehicle about 9:16 p.m. in the 4000 block of South Lake Park, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He was talking to someone standing outside the vehicle when that person pulled out a handgun and fired at him. Sims, who lived in the 5400 block of West Kamerling, was shot in the upper body and pronounced dead at the scene at 9:35 p.m.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, a man was shot to death in the Southwest Side Marquette Park neighborhood.

Brian B. Winters, 33, was standing outside a home at 2:12 p.m. in the 7300 block of South Rockwell when a person walked up and shot him in the head and chest, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Winters, who lived on the same block as the shooting, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 3:13 p.m. An autopsy Thursday ruled his death a homicide.

Wednesday’s first fatal shooting happened about 13 hours earlier in the Pilsen neighborhood.

Two men, ages 18 and 20, were standing on the street at 12:49 a.m. near the corner of West 18th Place and South Throop Street when a Chevrolet Tahoe pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to police.

The 20-year-old, identified as Armani Fierro, was shot in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:10 a.m., police and the medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the 1800 block of South Racine.

The younger man was also shot in the back and taken to Stroger, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred near Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park.

A 22-year-old man was standing with a group of people at 9:44 p.m. near the fountain in the 500 block of South Columbus when they got into an argument with several males who had exited a party bus, according to police. One of the people from the bus then pulled out a handgun and fired at the man. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition.

Nearly 40 minutes earlier, a man was shot while on a porch in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The 37-year-old was on his back porch about 9:08 p.m. in the 4900 block of West Superior when two males fired shots from the alley, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Just over an hour before that, a man was shot in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. The 40-year-old man was sitting in front of a home in the 5700 block of South Wolcott shortly before 8 p.m. when someone in a passing vehicle shot him in the elbow, police said. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Ten minutes earlier, two teen boys were shot in Austin. Two 14-year-old boys were outside in the 1000 block of North Menard about 7:45 p.m. when they were shot, possibly by someone in a passing vehicle, according to police. One of the boys was shot in the back and shoulder and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, while the other was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. Their conditions had both stabilized.

At least five other people were shot across Chicago Wednesday.
