4 dead, 12 wounded in Chicago shootings Wednesday

Four men were killed and 12 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago Wednesday.

A man was shot to death Wednesday afternoon in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side.

Eric Banks, 25, was on the sidewalk at 1:51 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Wabash when someone got out of a vehicle and fired at him, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Banks, who lived on the same block, was shot multiple times in the back and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:36 p.m.

More than 13 hours earlier, two men who were shooting at each other were both killed in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

At 12:41 a.m., a 34-year-old man sitting in a vehicle was involved in a shootout with a 28-year-old man standing in the street in the 12300 block of South Halsted, police said. The younger man was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene. Officers found the older man with a gunshot wound to the head in the 700 block of East 111th Street, where he was also pronounced dead.

About six minutes before that, a man was shot to death in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

At 12:35 a.m., the 51-year-old was arguing with another male in the 5100 block of South Honore, when the male pulled out a gun and opened fire, according to police. Officers later found the man lying in the street suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the deaths but did not release their names early Thursday.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened Wednesday night in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

Three men were standing on a street corner at 10:10 p.m. in the 400 block of West 79th Street when someone in a passing black vehicle fired shots, according to police. A 30-year-old man was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. The second man, 32, was shot in the right leg and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition. The third man, 34, was shot in the back and right leg and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.

Earlier Wednesday night, a man was shot in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

The 21-year-old was shot in the leg about 8:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Massasoit, police said. He took himself to Rush Oak Park Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

A teenage boy was shot about half an hour before that in the Chatham neighborhood.

The 17-year-old was standing on the street about 8 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Cottage Grove when he heard shots from a vehicle and realized he’d been hit, according to police. He suffered a graze wound to the left leg and walked into Trinity Hospital four hours after the shooting. He was being uncooperative with investigators.

About 20 minutes earlier, a man was shot several times in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The 36-year-old was standing in the 2800 block of South Komensky about 7:40 p.m. when someone in a passing SUV — thought to be black or gray — shot him twice in the right leg and once in the left arm, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Nearly an hour before that, three men were shot in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood.

The three were standing outside about 6:50 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Eberhart Avenue when they were shot by someone in a passing gray car, according to police. After the shooting, the car continued north on Eberhart before turning east onto 63rd Street. One man, 22, was shot in the right leg and listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital. Another man, 18, was shot in the right leg and taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition. The third man, 50, suffered a graze wound to his left leg and was treated and released at the scene.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, two men were shot in the Austin neighborhood.

The shooting happened at 12:59 p.m. in the 5000 block of West Concord, police said. The men, ages 21 and 34, were standing on the street when they heard gunfire and felt pain. Both ran to North and Leclaire avenues after the shooting. The 21-year-old was shot in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized. The older man was shot in the right hand and taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in good condition.

The day’s first nonfatal shooting happened at 1:39 a.m. in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side.

Officers on patrol heard “loud reports” from the 3300 block of West Harrison and arrived to find the 33-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the hip and both feet, according to police. The man was able to give officers descriptions of the shooters, the vehicle they were in and the direction in which they had driven away. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

Two suspects were taken into custody a short time later after the vehicle they were in crashed into a pole in the 2300 block of West Harrison, according to police. Investigators recovered two weapons and charges against the two suspects were pending.
