Police: Bicyclist killed in crash with cement truck in Evanston

A bicyclist was killed in a crash with a cement truck Thursday evening in north suburban Evanston.

About 5 p.m., the cement truck was traveling north on Sheridan Road when it made contact with the bicyclist traveling west on Northwestern Place, according to a statement from Evanston police.

Chuyuan Qiu, an 18-year-old woman who was a student at Northwestern University, was unresponsive when paramedics arrived and was taken with multiple injuries Evanston Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. Her address was not immediately known early Friday.

Investigators said it is believed that the woman was not wearing a helmet. As of Thursday night, no citations were issued to the cement truck operator, a 38-year-old man from Des Plaines.

The crash is being investigated by the Evanston Police Department’s Traffic Bureau with the assistance of the Major Crash Assistance Team.
