A DUI suspect has been charged with assaulting a police officer for allegedly spitting in the officer’s face during his arrest early Saturday in west suburban Lisle.
An officer pulled over a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox at 1:25 a.m. on Maple Avenue near Elm Street for speeding, improper lane usage and only having one headlight, according to a statement from Lisle police.
The driver, 25-year-old Thomas J. Navickas, was arrested after “showing signs of impairment,” police said. Officers were able to handcuff him after a “physical struggle.”
As he was being escorted to a squad car, Navickas allegedly spit in the face of a Lisle police officer, “causing irritation to her eye,” police said. The officer was treated at Edward Hospital in Naperville before being released and returned to duty.
Navickas, who lives in Lemont, was taken to the Lisle Police Department and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, aggravated battery to a peace officer, aggravated assault to a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding and improper lane usage, police said.
He was taken to the DuPage County Jail before being released on bond Sunday afternoon, according to the DuPage County sheriff’s office.
