Fire winless streak hits three in 2-1 loss to Union

CHESTER, Pa. — Cory Burke scored on a header in the 65th minute, helping the Philadelphia Union beat the Fire 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The Union (13-3-5) have won five of their last six matches and lead the MLS with 44 points. The Fire (5-9-6) are winless in their last three.

Kacper Przybylko scored on a penalty kick for the Union in the 28th minute. It was his first goal in five matches. He was awarded the kick when Fire defender Francisco Calvo was whistled for a handball in the box.

Eight minutes later, Calvo got a red card for a foul on Alejandro Bedoya.

Robert Beric tied it in the 42nd minute on a pass from Djordje Mihailovic. It was Beric’s 10th goal of the season. The scoring chance started on Ignacio Aliseda’s shot that was saved by Andre Blake, but the rebound went to Mihailovic.

Blake blocked Beric’s left-footed shot from a difficult angle in the 64th minute. Beric also missed a header attempt from close range in the 76th.

The winning goal came on a cross from Olivier Mbaizo. Burke was unmarked and his header bounced past Fire goalie Bobby Shuttleworth. Blake finished with three saves for the Union, who have allowed only nine goals in their last 11 games.

Colombian defender Carlos Teran made his debut for the Fire, coming in in the 78th minute for Alvaro Medran.
