Thousands of marchers in Chicago joined the national outrage over the killing of a black man in Minneapolis police custody, hitting the streets in protest on Saturday for a second day.

Though the demonstrations started peacefully, some protesters and police clashed violently later in the day.

Downtown was ravaged by rioters and looters, who shattered multiple storefront windows and carried off goods from inside. Some rioters were also seen smashing windows of police cars, tipping at least one Chicago Police SUV onto its side and setting several ablaze.

At least four people were shot, one fatally and there were 240 arrests, Chicago Police Department spokesman Howard Ludwig said Sunday. He also said 20 officers were injured.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who imposed a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as the situation downtown escalated Saturday night, established new precautionary safety measures that restricts access to the Loop. She also announced Sunday that Gov. J.B. Pritzker had activated 375 Illinois National Guard “to maintain a limited presence in support” of the Chicago Police Department.
