PHOENIX – This might turn out to be the biggest week of Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman’s life. On top of Super Bowl XLIX, Sherman and his girlfriend are expecting their first child – a boy – very soon.

“He’s not supposed to come on Sunday,” Sherman said Thursday during his final pre- press conference. “Obviously that would change some things, but I think he’s going to be a disciplined young man and stay in there until after the game. He’s going to do his father his first favor and stay in there another week or two.”

Sherman, arguably the league’s best cornerback, wouldn’t say if he’d miss the game Sunday to be with his girlfriend should she go into labor while in town. But his teammates support him either way.

“That would be a special birthday,” quarterback Russell Wilson said. “If Richard’s son is born on Sunday, I would be so happy for him. I know he would have a great game. I know if I’m Tom [Brady], I’m not throwing his way if [Sherman’s] son is born on the same day. Richard will want to make some extra plays for him.”

Official Bears news

It’s now official. Former Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will be part of Nick Saban’s staff at the University of Alabama. Tucker will coach the defensive backs but also has the title of assistant head coach.

In other personnel news, the New York Jets officially named Rex Hogan, who was a national scout for the Bears, their senior director of college scouting.
