Yes, but to a point. “Coverage sacks” exist for a reason. The Bears and the Oakland Raiders are the only two teams without a sack in the first two weeks. The New England Patriots have the most at 11. But the Bears’ bad pass rush doesn’t absolve cornerbacks Kyle Fuller and Alan Ball from their pass-interference penalties or making better plays on the ball. The Bears need them to be better.
Start Fales? Maybe against the Raiders at Soldier Field in Week 4. In Seattle against an incensed 0-2 Seahawks team? That would be a like throwing him to the wolves during a baptism by fire, while Richard Sherman screams at you as if you’re Michael Crabtree. Believe it or not, the Bears will try to win, and for now, they believe Clausen is best. Until he isn’t. That said, Clausen is 0-9 on the road in his career.

A good week of practice can turn him into a starter. He should be given that opportunity after Fuller was benched against the Arizona Cardinals. You’re right, Mitchell was one of the Bears’ best playmakers this preseason. But the Bears seemed intent on pairing Fuller with Ball from the get-go. Their combined struggles and Tracy Porter’s bum hamstring make this a big week for Mitchell.
Fantasy, duh. Quarterback Russell Wilson, running back Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle defense should all produce for their fantasy owners. In realty, this was going to be a tough game for the Bears even if quarterback Jay Cutler was healthy. The Bears may not be 14-point underdogs like they are now in Las Vegas. But the Seahawks only would be slightly less imposing with Cutler under center.
On to next season already? I’ve gotten plenty of the draft questions after the Bears’ 0-2 start and Cutler’s injury. The Bears look destined for a top-5 pick, but a Cutler comeback could always change that. Free agency comes first, and Pace will want to use it to improve his draft situation. But for me, it’s time that the Bears finally draft Cutler’s successor. The answer won’t be there in free agency. Cutler, who is signed through 2020, could still be the best option. It’s time to find and groom a young QB even if Cutler excels under coordinator Adam Gase. I like California’s Jared Goff and Michigan Sate’s Connor Cook.
