No surgery for Bears QB Mitch Trubisky, but injury makes Matt Nagy think twice

Trubisky will almost certainly miss at least one game and rehab his shoulder with an eye on returning.

Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky isn’t done yet.

Trubisky will not need season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder after getting hurt Sunday against the Saints, and coach Matt Nagy said he won’t go on injured reserve.

While Nagy was relieved that Trubisky’s season isn’t over, he’s out Sunday against the Titans. The Bears will promote practice-quad quarterback Tyler Bray to be Nick Foles’ backup.

Trubisky’s injury, though, is making Nagy rethink using him as a wildcat quarterback. The Bears can’t afford to be without a safety net at quarterback, and it’s probably not in Trubisky’s best interest when he’ll be trying to restart his career with another team next season.

Nagy hinted that he would give Trubisky a say in whether he wanted to continue in the wildcat formation.

“We’ll talk through all that,” Nagy said. “We’ll make the best decision. I know this: He’s one of the toughest players I’ve been around. He’s super tough. I have an idea and a feeling what he’s going to tell me and what his answer’s going to be. So we’ll just have to work through that.”

The Bears can’t get another quarterback through the coronavirus protocol in time to play Sunday, but they had workouts scheduled for free agents Jake Rudock and Kyle Sloter.
