Man dies after Chicago Lawn shooting

A 21-year-old man was killed in a shooting Thursday in Chicago Lawn on the Southwest Side.

He was in front of a home about 2:35 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Artesian Avenue when someone approached and fired shots at him, Chicago police said.

Gerald Kates suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and the abdomen, police said.

He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Area One detectives are investigating the shooting.
