A 4-year-old boy is believed to have shot himself in the leg Saturday inside an apartment in south suburban Dolton.

Officers responded about 4 p.m. to an apartment in the 15100 block of South King Drive and the boy was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was expected to survive, Dolton spokesman Sean Howard said.

Police are still investigating how the child obtained the gun, Howard said.

When officers arrived, the mother of the child and another person were inside the apartment, according to Howard. The boy’s mother told officers she had no knowledge of a handgun being inside the home.
