WASHINGTON – Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich has won the endorsement of New Hampshire’s largest newspaper, which passed over front-runner Mitt Romney for the nod.
The New Hampshire Union Leader’s editorial potentially resets the race in the state with the first-in-the-nation primary.
The backing builds on the former House speaker’s recent rise in the polls and quick work to build a campaign. The conservative newspaper’s choice also dings Romney ahead of the Jan. 10 vote that’s vital to his campaign strategy. Romney is the former governor of neighboring Massachusetts.
Meanwhile, Georgia businessman Herman Cain tells CNN that he would not support amnesty for illegal immigrants in a criticism of a Gingrich proposal. And former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman tells “Fox News Sunday” that the endorsement means the race remains unpredictable. AP
