The Stagg High School senior charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of his parents in their home in unincorporated Palos Township used a hammer to beat them, a police source said Wednesday.

The injuries suffered by John Granat’s parents, John and Maria Granat, were so severe that investigators initially thought they had been shot, the source said.

Police believe Granat’s mother was sleeping when he allegedly attacked her in his parents’ bedroom late Saturday or early Sunday in the family’s home in the 12700 block of 81st Court near Palos Park.

The medical examiner ruled both parents died after suffering multiple blunt force injuries. Maria Granat also suffered stab wounds. Sun-Times Media
