An 18-year-old man was killed and three other people, including two girls, were injured in a crash in northwest Indiana on Sunday.

At about 6:50 p.m. Sunday, a 2001 Dodge two-door car was eastbound on State Route 231 near County Line Road in an unincorporated area near Hebron when it crossed the median and onto the shoulder of the westbound lane, striking a NIPSCO utility pole, according to a Lake County sheriff’s office statement.

Eighteen-year-old Mario Enrique Arroyo, of the 900 Block of West Street in Valparaiso, Ind., suffered blunt force trauma in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:30 p.m., the Lake County coroner’s office said.

The 19-year-old driver, a Hammond, Ind., resident; and two female passengers, ages 7 and 15, were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, police said.

The cause of the crash is unknown.
