A man died and a 16-year-old boy was rescued Sunday after a car drove off a bridge and plunged into the Calumet River in Hegewisch on the Far South Side.
Witnesses told officers a white sedan tore through a retention net in the 12400 block of South Torrence Avenue and went into the Calumet River as the bridge was going up, Chicago police said.
The driver, 38-year-old Jaime Navarro of Calumet City, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
A 16-year-old boy was rescued by a passing boat, and police took him to the same hospital in good condition, police said.
