Rauner has 8-point lead over Quinn in latest poll

A new poll shows the race for Illinois governor between Republican Bruce Rauner and Gov. Pat Quinn is tightening up.

A Reboot Illinois/We Ask America poll has Rauner with an 8.5-point lead over Quinn, after having a 10-point lead in June and 14-point lead in July in previous Reboot Illinois/We Ask America polls. A poll conducted on Aug. 6 by Early & Often/We Ask America had Rauner with a 13-point lead.

The latest poll was conducted Sept. 2 among 1,064 likely voters and has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.

Of those who responded, 45.5 percent gave the nod to Rauner, compared to 37 percent for Quinn. Libertarian candidate Chad Grimm, included in the poll for the first time after the part won a place on the ballot, comes in at 7 percent.

As I’ve seen in other polls recently, the race for governor is tightening up, said We Ask America Chief Operating Officer Gregg Durham. Undoubtedly, the presence of a Libertarian candidate gives voters who aren’t happy with their choices an outlet for their frustration, and it appears to be hurting Rauner more than Quinn. Nearly 12 percent of the self-described independents chose Grimm; a situation that probably won’t last…but where will they end up? Quinn continues to dominate in Chicago, with a 62-18 percent lead over Rauner, while it’s a dead heat in suburban Cook County (44-44).
