(ITASCA) An elderly woman was injured when her car went under downed crossing gates and was struck by a Metra train Tuesday morning in northwest suburban Itasca.

Inbound Milwaukee District/West Line train No. 2212, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 7:53 a.m., struck a vehicle about 7 a.m. at Walnut Street in Itasca, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.

An elderly woman driving a Honda Accord was southbound on Walnut when her car went under the crossing gates, Itasca Police Sgt. John Matuga said.

She stopped on the tracks, and witnesses saw her reverse lights come on, but she wasn’t able to get off the tracks in time, Matuga said.

The train struck the front passenger side of the car, knocking it off the tracks, Matuga said.

The woman was alert and conscious when Matuga arrived at the scene, and she was taken to a hospital. Police could not immediately provide an update on her condition. She was the only person in the car.

Both inbound and outbound trains are experiencing “extensive” delays as a result of the crash, according to Metra.
