No bond for man charged with Washington Park shooting

A man charged with shooting another man in the head Wednesday night in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood has been ordered held without bond.

Davonta Owens, 25, of the 5200 block of South Indiana, faces one felony count each of aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated use of a deadly weapon and attempted first-degree murder, police said.

On Saturday, Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Owens held without bond.

About 8:35 p.m. Wednesday, Owens and two masked men approached a 31-year-old man in the 5100 block of South Calumet, authorities said.

First Owens said, “I heard you called the police on me,” then pistol whipped the man, prosecutors said at the bond hearing. The man fell, and then Owens shot him in the head.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said at the time.

Police found Owens about two blocks away, but are still looking for his accomplices, prosecutors said, adding that there was an eyewitness to the shooting.
