Naperville police use Narcan to save teen girl suffering drug overdose

Police in west suburban Naperville have reported their first use of an anti-heroin overdose drug saved the life of a 17-year-old girl last week.

Officers were called at 10:24 p.m. Jan. 23 to an apartment in the 700 block of Bernedetti Drive, where they found a 17-year-old girl unconscious in a bedroom displaying signs of a drug overdose, according to a statement from Naperville police.

The officers administered a nasal dose of Narcan and the girl regained consciousness before paramedics arrived and took her to Edward Hospital in Naperville, police said.

Narcan is a drug that can reverse the effects of an opiate overdose.

The officers responding to last week’s overdose had been trained and equipped with Narcan “just days before the incident,” police said.

The DuPage County Narcan Program has been supplying law enforcement agencies with the drug and training first responders to recognize signs of an overdose and administer it since November 2013.

The program is credited with saving 36 lives since it was implemented, according to police.
