A man was arrested early Friday after police say he was caught burglarizing vehicles in north suburban Evanston.

Anthony L. Stewart, 48, of the 2100 block of Emerson Street, faces one count felony of burglary to vehicle and one misdemeanor count of theft of lost or mislaid property, according to a statement from Evanston police.

About 1:20 a.m. Friday, someone called police after seeing Stewart rummaging through a parked vehicle in the 2100 block of Grant Street, police said.

When police arrested Stewart, he admitted to entering the vehicle, which was unlocked at the time, and removing loose change from inside, police said.

He also had other property on him that was believed to be possible proceeds from other vehicle burglaries in the area. Detectives were able to track down some of the items and found they were taken from inside an unlocked vehicle in the 2400 block of Brown Avenue, police said. Investigators are still working to track down the owners.

A judge set Stewart’s bond at $25,000 on Saturday and he remains in custody at the Cook County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office. He is next due in court on Feb. 5.
