One trucker killed, one cited in fatal crash on Borman

(GARY, Ind.) A UPS driver was killed and a Chicago trucker was ticketed following a three-truck crash on the Borman Expressway in northwest Indiana early Friday.

It happened about 3:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-80/94, just west of I-65 in Gary, Ind., according to Indiana State Police.

A 2010 Kenworth tractor bobtail with no trailer went out of control and started to spin out before being hit on the rear driver’s side by a 2014 Volvo semi pulling double trailers, a statement from ISP said.

The Kenworth then went across all lanes of traffic before striking the concrete barrier wall on the outer shoulder, slid along the wall and struck a disabled 2006 International semi owned by UPS, also pulling pulling double trailers, ISP said.

The Kenworth clipped the rear of the second trailer, then struck the back of the first trailer and the tractor on the passenger side before stopping against the barrier and tractor, according to ISP.

The Elkhart-based UPS truck was driven by Marvin Reinholtz, 38 of Osceola, Ind., who was “found outside partially pinned under the front right tire of his own tractor and the rear left tire of the Kenworth,” ISP said.

Reinholtz was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County coroner’s office. The coroner’s office determined his cause of death was blunt force trauma from a motor vehicle accident.

The driver of the Kenworth — 32-year-old Ismael Flores of Chicago — was not injured in the crash and was cited for unsafe lane movement, ISP said. The truck was owned by EIC Transport Inc. of Chicago.

The 58-year-old Michigan man driving the Volvo semi was not injured. Neither semi lost its load in the crash, police said.
