Howling winds and thunderstorms, some possibly severe, are expected to hit the Chicago area Wednesday night into Thursday.
The showers and storms will arrive after the evening rush about 7 p.m. and continue until about 1 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
However, the worst part of the storms could be damaging winds, according to the weather service. Sustained winds of 30 mph and gusts of 45 mph or more have led the weather service to issue a wind advisory for the entire area. It will be in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 6 p.m. Thursday.
The strong winds could lead to minor property damage make travel difficult, according to the weather service.
The storms won’t just affect Chicago—according to AccuWeather, the severe weather outbreak will threaten an area spanning from Houston to Milwaukee.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency has encouraged residents to stay aware.
“Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes can happen any time of the year,” IEMA Director James Joseph said in a statement.
“We’re keeping an eye on the storm system predicted for Wednesday, and encourage everyone to stay aware and be prepared to seek shelter if a storm warning is issued,” Joseph said.
On Thursday, there is a 30 percent chance of showers before 1 p.m. and the day will be cloudy with a high near 49 degrees, according to the weather service.
