Man charged with Tri-State Tollway shooting

A Chicago man has been charged with shooting another man last month while driving on the Tri-State Tollway near south suburban Markham.

El Rekiko D. King, 36, is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony, for the Oct. 19 shooting, Illinois State Police said in a statement.

The victim was driving a red Chevrolet Impala in the northbound lanes of I-294 near 163rd Street at 9:13 a.m. when he got into a traffic argument with the driver of a minivan, state police said at the time. The minivan driver fired into the Impala, striking the driver.

The injured man pulled off the highway at Plaza 41 to call police. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with non-life-threatening injuries, according to ISP. A child in the back seat of the Impala suffered no apparent injuries.

Investigators used video surveillance footage to identify King as the shooter, state police said. He was arrested without incident Wednesday.

King is being held on a $350,000 bond, ISP said. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 16.
