A man died after being shot Monday evening in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said.

About 6 p.m., the 24-year-old was walking in the 5600 block of West Byron when he heard gunfire and realized he’d been shot in the back, according to Chicago Police.

He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

A police source said the victim is a documented gang member.
