Man dies after being struck by vehicle in Valparaiso

A 49-year-old man died two days after he was struck by a vehicle Friday night in northwest Indiana.

A 17-year-old girl was driving southbound on Sturdy Road near Martin Drive at 10:07 p.m. when she struck something, she told Valparaiso police.

She got out of her vehicle to see what she had struck and realized it was a person, police said. She called police and tried to offer aid.

Anthony E. Cotton was airlifted from the scene to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Cotton, of Valparaiso, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:43 a.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found he died of multiple injuries from the crash, and his death was ruled an accident.

Valparaiso police are investigating, but the driver is not expected to be cited or charged.
