$750K bond for man charged with fatal South Shore stabbing

A 43-year-old man stabbed his friend to death after they smoked crack cocaine together early Saturday in the South Shore neighborhood, authorities said.

Brandon Young has been charged with first-degree murder, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Young and 43-year-old Dorian D. Smith smoked crack cocaine together with a group late Friday in the 7800 block of South Shore Drive, then went to purchase more crack, assistant state’s attorney Molly Donnelly said at Young’s bond hearing Wednesday.

The two returned home and the group got ready for bed, Donnelly said. Young and a witness then went into a bedroom, while Smith stayed in the front room.

Young left the bedroom and went to the front room, where he began stabbing Smith, Donnelly said. The witness heard moaning, left the bedroom and saw Young stabbing Smith while holding one knife in each hand.

Smith suffered 12 stab wounds to the hand, ribcage, back, chin, lip and rear of his skull, Donnelly said.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:11 a.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 8100 block of South Bishop.

The witness ran back to the bedroom to call 911, but Young followed and took the phone away, Donnelly said. Young left, went to his nearby home in the 2200 block of East 102nd Street, and called police.

Young was arrested at his home within an hour, Donnelly said. The witness identified him in a lineup.

Police recovered two knives from the scene, one with an 8-inch blade and one with a 3.5-inch blade, Donnelly said.

Young previously served time in prison for unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and robbery, dating back to 1990, Donnelly said.

Judge Laura Sullivan ordered him held on a $750,000 bond.
