Ruse-entry burglary reported in Roselle

Authorities are warning residents after a ruse-entry burglary was reported last week in northwest suburban Roselle.

In a ruse-entry burglary, one person will typically distract a victim while another enters a home and steals valuables, according to a statement from the Cook County sheriff’s office.

A man approached a home in the 100 block of West Nerge Road in unincorporated Roselle about 4:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and told a woman who lived there that he was a landscaper, according to the sheriff’s office.

He walked her to her backyard to explain the services he could provide before answering his phone, speaking in a foreign language and leaving, the sheriff’s office said. The victim later discovered that a safe and other items were missing from the home.

The man was between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-8, weighed 170 to 180 pounds and had a think black mustache and a medium brown complexion, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office is warning area residents not to let anyone inside their homes if they weren’t expecting them and to ask workers for identification.
