The Fighting Irish’s 42-30 victory over Pittsburgh Saturday kept Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff picture, but the team’s starting running back may be held out of football activities for a while.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said senior C.J. Prosise underwent concussion protocol Sunday following an injury he suffered in the Pitt win. Prosise left in the first quarter of the contest with five rushes for 28 yards.

Kelly is hopeful that the team’s leading rusher will return to practice this week.

Per ESPN:

He’s going through the concussion protocol, Kelly said Sunday. He landed on his shoulder and kind of whiplashed his neck when he got down to the ground and a player landed on him, so he was better today. He’ll go through a physical conditioning tomorrow, and if he obviously passes that, then we’ll move to the next stage. But we’re hopeful that if he takes the steps necessary that we’ll have him back out on the practice field this week.

Freshman Josh Adams came in for the injured Prosise against the Panthers and ran 20 times for 147 yards. He also caught a 5-yard touchdown pass. Surely it was a game Adams will remember for the rest of his life, but the Irish will need more games like this with the rash of injuries to afflict the team.
