This season has been a rather impressive one for Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg. He’s made a number of big plays in some tight games, but Saturday’s loss to Northwestern was marred by poor drives by PSU’s offense.

On one drive, Hackenberg managed to hit a zebra on a play intended for a Nittany Lion. It almost looks as if Hackenberg was trying to hit the referee in the head. The incomplete pass was deadly accurate.

Even though it’s doubtful the Penn State quarterback was targeting the official, it seems big plays can be gained when using the ref as a decoy or pick.

Hackenberg failed to throw a touchdown and needed 40 passes to throw 210 yards. The Northwestern defense is pretty stout, but maybe Hackenberg isn’t quite as good as his 2015 numbers suggest?
