Two fatally shot in Belmont Cragin identified

Two people who were shot and killed Sunday morning in the Northwest Side Belmont Cragin neighborhood have been identified.

Simmy Madrid, 30; and Michelle Malave, 34, were walking in the 2700 block of North Lavergne about 6:30 a.m. when someone got out of a car and opened fire, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The woman was struck in the head and the man was shot multiple times, police said. Both were taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Malave, of the 3300 block of Rose Street in Franklin Park, was pronounced dead at 7:15 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. Madrid, of the 1600 bock of North LeClaire, was pronounced dead at 12:31 p.m.

Both died of multiple gunshot wounds, and their deaths were ruled homicides.

Police said the shooting may have been gang-related.
