State child welfare investigators are looking into allegations of abuse and neglect against the parents of a 4-year-old Englewood boy who died Thursday morning on the South Side.
Arthur E. Carter Jr. was found unresponsive at his home in the 7000 block of South Yale about midnight, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The toddler was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:52 a.m., authorities said. An autopsy on Friday was inconclusive pending further investigation.
The state Department of Child and Family Services is investigating Arthur’s mother for abuse and his father for neglect, DCFS spokesman Andrew Flach said. No other children are in the home.
The agency had prior contact with the mother in 2013, when she was investigated for inadequate supervision of other children who have since left the household, Flach said.
Police are conducting a death investigation.
