Circle Interchange work messing with driving downtown

Driving in Chicago this weekend? Watch out for work that’s shutting down lanes around the Jane Byrne Circle Interchange, causing big delays.

The third of four planned weekends of lane closings around the downtown interchange is under way, and that’s making things difficult for drivers on the Dan Ryan, Kennedy and Eisenhower expressways.

It started Friday evening,. Crews continue work on the flyover bridge linking the inbound Dan Ryan and outbound Eisenhower.

As a result, the inbound Eisenhower is closed at the Byrne Interchange until 5 a.m. Monday, though traffic can still access the Dan Ryan / Kennedy exit ramps. Traffic is being rerouted to the outbound Ryan’s Roosevelt Road exit and along the 18th Street interchange to Congress Parkway.

The outbound Eisenhower / Congress Parkway is also closed at the Byrne Interchange, though Ithe Dan Ryan / Kennedy exit ramps remain open. A detour is rerouting traffic along Wells, Harrison, Jefferson, Van Buren and Ashland to connect with the Eisenhower. Traffic on Lower Wacker Drive follows the same detour.

The Kennedy and Dan Ryan are down to a single lane in each direction between Ohio and Harrison since 8 p.m. Saturday, with all lanes closed for 15-minute intervals from 10 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, when all lanes are supposed to reopen.

To try to accommodate people who leave their cars at home because of the road work, the CTA is running longer trains on the Red, Blue, Brown, Green and Pink lines over the weekend.

Sunday morning on the city’s South Side, the Chicago Half Marathon will affect traffic around Jackson Park, so Metra is adding an extra train from Millennium Station to 63rd Street at 5:45 a.m.

Street closings along the race route will affect South Shore Drive, 63rd Street, Hayes, Cornell, Marquette and Stony Island from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m, with roads inside Jackson Park closed longer.

At about the same time, the Les Turner ALS Walk for Life will be held on the Museum Campus Drive near Soldier Field.
