Man shot to death during robbery in Gary

A man was fatally shot during a robbery Tuesday night in northwest Indiana.

The 40-year-old victim and his girlfriend were at a gas station at 49th and Broadway in Gary at 8:51 p.m. when a male suspect attempted to rob them, then shot the man in the chest, according to Gary Police Cpl. Douglas Drummond.

The victim drove off, but lost consciousness, crashing the vehicle into a barrier in the 300 block of East 49th Avenue, Drummond said.

The Cedar Lake man was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:40 p.m., according to Drummond and the Lake County coroner’s office. His name has not yet been released.
