A person of interest is in custody after a 26-year-old woman was found shot to death in her northwest Indiana home Wednesday afternoon.

A man called police at 12:51 p.m. Wednesday to ask officers to conduct a well-being check on his daughter, who he had not seen in a week, according to Lake Station police.

Officers arrived at the home in the 2700 block of New Hampshire Street and smelled the odor of a decomposing body, police said.

They obtained a search warrant and found 26-year-old Aimee Giro dead inside the home, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

Giro died of a gunshot wound and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the coroner’s office.

Police said it is believed to be an isolated incident.
