Several shoulder and lane closures are planned to begin Friday along the Eisenhower Expressway in the western suburbs for a safety improvement project.

Daytime shoulder closures will occur in both directions at several points along I-290 between I-355 and I-294, according to a statement from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Nighttime shoulder closures are also planned on eastbound I-290 at Bloomingdale Road and on the ramp from eastbound I-290 to southbound I-294.

The closures are necessary for a safety project that includes the installation of guardrails and impact attenuators along I-290, IDOT said.

Nighttime lane closures will also begin Friday for resurfacing on the ramp from eastbound I-290 to eastbound Illinois Route 64, according to IDOT.

The project is expected to be completed by this summer.
