A 16-year-old boy was killed and a 17-year-old boy was injured in a shooting in the Chatham neighborhood early Sunday on the South Side, police said.

The teenagers were standing on the sidewalk in the 8200 block of South Ingleside about 1 a.m. when someone approached on foot and fired shots at them, police said.

The 16-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office couldn’t immediately confirm the death.

The 17-year-old was shot in the leg and was also taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

A police source said the 17-year-old is a known gang member.
