Elgin fire damages two apartment buildings, six cars

A fire in northwest suburban Elgin damaged two apartment buildings and six cars late Friday.

Crews responding to a call of a dumpster fire in the 900 block of Congdon Avenue at 8:38 a.m. found a dumpster enclosure and two cars on fire, according to a statement from Elgin Fire Department. The fire was struck out within 12 minutes of their arrival.

No injuries were reported, fire officials said.

The fire damaged six cars – two of which were destroyed – and melted the siding and damaged the windows of two apartment buildings, officials said. The estimated damage of the fire was $250,000.

The cause of the fire could not be determined, Battalion Chief Tim Michaels said on the phone, adding that the property manager said they’ve had problems with tenants putting used charcoal in the dumpsters.
