The Blackhawks are counting on some of their prospects to step up and fill out their bottom-six this season. But they added a veteran winger to the competition on Tuesday by signing Jordin Tootoo to a one-year deal.
The 33-year-old Tootoo had four goals and five assists in 66 games with the New Jersey Devils last season, his 12th in the NHL. Tootoo scored 10 goals in 2014-15, but is known better for his fighting. He fought nine times last season, and 86 times in his career with Nashville, Detroit and New Jersey.
Tootoo wrote a memoir, “All The Way: My Life On Ice,” two years ago, which details his brother’s suicide and his own previous battles with alcohol.
