A Northwest Side man has been charged with driving drunk in a crash that left an off-duty Chicago Police officer dead early Sunday in southwest suburban Forest View.
Andres Quinones, 33, faces felony counts of aggravated DUI causing death and failure to stop in a fatal accident in the crash that left Officer Charles Barango dead about 2 a.m., authorities said.
Barango, 49, was stopped on his motorcycle at a red light at the Central Avenue exit off the southbound Stevenson Expressway, according to Forest View police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
As the light turned green, he drove forward and his motorcycle was hit by a car, which ran a red light as it headed north, police said.
The officer, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. Barango lived in the 5700 block of West 63rd Street. The 14-year veteran was a 5th District tactical officer, colleagues said.
Quinones was treated at the scene and arrested, police said. He appeared in court Tuesday in Bridgeview, where a judge ordered him held on $100,000 bail, according to Cook County Circuit Court records. He also faces misdemeanor charges of DUI, aggravated speeding, improper lane usage and disobeying traffic lights.
Quinones, of the 5200 bock of West Montana Street, is due in court again Oct. 17.
