A man died after the car he was driving went off the road and into a ditch late Friday on I-80/94 in northwest Indiana.

The 2009 Honda went off the north side of westbound I-80/94 near the Grant Street exit in Gary shortly before midnight, according to a statement from Indiana State Police.

Two state police troopers found the car in a water-filled ditch about 30 feet from the road with 57-year-old Nicholas S. Melegos unconscious and not breathing in the driver’s seat, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

Since the water was too deep and murky to remove the driver, the troopers attempted to perform CPR while the car was being towed out, police said.

Melegos, who lived in the 600 block of West 66th Place in Merrillville, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:27 a.m. Saturday, the coroner’s office said. The cause and manner of his death were pending.

Police said there were no visible signs of trauma and his death might have been a “medical incident.”
