18-year-old slain in Austin

An 18-year-old man from the western suburbs was fatally shot on Friday evening in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 5:15 p.m., Romaine Elkins was standing in the 1500 block of North Linder when people in a dark-colored SUV started firing in his direction and he was shot in the chest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office

The Naperville resident was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died at 5:52 p.m., authorities said.

After the shooting, the SUV sped west on Le Moyne and crashed into another vehicle, police said. A 71-year-old woman in the other vehicle suffered injuries in the crash, but was listed in good condition.

No one was in custody Saturday morning.
