A woman was killed and a man was critically wounded Friday evening in a Back of the Yards neighborhood shooting on the South Side.

At 5:29 p.m., 47-year-old Erica Frazier and a 46-year-old man were standing in the 5200 block of South May when a male between 16 and 19 years old fired at them, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. They were both struck in their torsos.

They were both taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where Frazier was pronounced dead at 6:02 p.m., authorities said. She lived in the same neighborhood.

Police had initially reported that the man was also pronounced dead, but later said he remained alive in critical condition.

Area Central detectives were conducting a homicide investigation.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that the man shot was not dead, as police initially reported.
