A Subway restaurant on the Southeast Side was damaged early Monday when an SUV crashed into it and pushed over a load-bearing pillar.

A male was westbound in a gray Ford Expedition about 2:45 a.m. in the 4000 block of East 106th Street when he hit the front entrance area of a food establishment and went through the building, police said.

A police source said the driver crashed into the Subway at that location.

An employee inside the restaurant was alone and uninjured, police said. The driver then drove away.

The crash damaged the building’s front windows and destroyed its interior seating and tables, police said.

The crash also pushed over the building’s center pillar, possibly making the building unsafe for habitation, police said. An inspector was called to examine the damage.

Area South detectives, who are investigating, described the driver as a male with long hair.
