A woman was wounded Friday in a shooting in an apartment on the Near North Side.

About 11:50 a.m., the 64-year-old woman was involved in an argument with a male who fired shots at her in the 100 block of West Elm, according to Chicago police.

Officers initially believed they were responding to an active shooter situation but soon learned that a male suspect had shot a woman inside his apartment, police said.

The woman was struck in her chest and abdomen, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, police said The alleged shooter was taken into custody. Charges are pending.

A male was also taken to Northwestern after suffering cuts, the Chicago Fire Department said. It wasn’t immediately known whether it was the same male who opened fire.
