The search for coyotes that bit a 6-year-old child and man in Chicago

There hasn’t been a coyote attack in Chicago in decades, according to the head of Animal Care and Control.

Chicago police and Animal Control crews swarmed the lakefront after coyotes attacked a 6-year-old boy near Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and a man in separate incidents.

Animal Control were able to capture one coyote late Thursday night in Lincoln Park, but were still searching for others reportedly roaming around the city. One reported sighting in Oz Park earlier in the day prompted a brief lockdown of two nearby schools.

There hasn’t been a coyote attack in Chicago in decades, said Kelley Gandurski, head of Chicago Animal Care and Control.

Seth Magle, director of Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute, said coyote attacks on humans are generally “extremely rare,” but are more likely to happen when an animal finds Itself in a “desperate situation” or is being fed.
